Swim England is launching a Coaching and Teaching Register in 2019 that will bring benefits to clubs, coaches, teachers and participants. From January to March 2019 all clubs will be required to provide basic information on all active coaches and teachers, regardless of qualification or discipline for inclusion on a new Swim England Coaching and Teaching Register. This includes paid and voluntary coaches and teachers.

Tiverton Swimming Club raised an amazing £440.00 for Children in Need at their “Pudsey Plunge” fundraising event. Eighty Seven swimmers took part aged seven years upwards, including the Masters section of the club.

Dedicated synchronised swimming coach Clair Murphy has been crowned BBC West’s Unsung Hero for 2018. Community midwife Clair, who has coached hundreds of youngsters at Calne Alpha Synchronised Swimming Club, in Wiltshire, over the last 25 years, will now attend the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards in Birmingham on Sunday 16 December.

The annual Masters Development Day will be returning again in 2019, running on Sunday 13th January at the University of Bath. Topics include designing your training, using psychological skills and an introduction to open water swimming, there will also be two pool sessions, a Q&A session and a Yoga strength and conditioning class.

This is a voluntary role for a four-year period. To ensure continuity the posts Regional Chairman and Regional Vice Chairman cannot be open for election at the same time, consequently the initial period of office will be for 2 years followed by another period of 4 years. The Youth Advisory Panel is a group of young people aged between 16 and 25 years old. Collectively, they act as representatives for all young people involved in the sport of swimming, providing them with a voice. The Youth Advisory Panel meets up to 4 times per year, usually for a 4 hour meeting at a weekend, and typically in Loughborough at the Head Offices of Swim England. Meetings are led by the Youth Advisory Panel chair, who is supported by a vice chair, with both being elected from the Youth Advisory Panel membership, by their peers. In addition to attendance at meetings, there may be a small amount of work required between meetings, and some online surveys sent by Swim England to seek more immediate feedback on a particular topic. Youth Advisory Panel members’ expenses for travelling to and from meetings are covered by Swim England to ensure that these are accessible to all.

The National Summer Meet (50m) 2018 is Swim England’s biggest domestic swimming event of the year. It takes place at Ponds Forge, Sheffield from 31 July – 4 August. The Summer Meet forms part of a swimming competition structure in Great Britain whereby the top ranked swimmers in each event are invited to compete at the British Swimming Summer Championships. The next ranked swimmers at English affiliated clubs – or those who have chosen to be ranked as an English swimmer – are invited to compete at the English Nationals. The rankings are on swimmers’ performances at level 1 meets between the qualification window, between 1 March and 28 May 2018.

The 2018 British Summer Championships took place across six days at Ponds Forge in Sheffield from 24–29th July. The Championships continue to form part of a broader Performance Pathway Strategy aimed at increasing and supporting junior talent on the journey towards senior medal-winning performance, as well as offering more athletes across the home nations an opportunity to compete at one of the end of season events.

A 30 strong team of swimmers traveled to Sofia in Bulgaria to participate in the Bulgarian National Championships. This competition ran from 27th June to 2nd July 2018. There was an impressive medal haul of 30 medals across the events. The Team was led by Jo John (Head Coach) and Lyn Rayment (Lead Team Manager) with support from Gregg King, Marc Williams, Ian Jones (Coaching Team) and Mark Crispin (Assistant Team Manager).

It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that Marilyn Evans died on Friday 22nd June 2018. Marilyn, or Bo as we all knew her, joined Chippenham ASC late in 1969 after being advised that her sons were good enough to join a swimming club. That was the start of 48 years of total commitment within the sport which benefitted thousands of children and poolside helpers.

Newton Abbot Under 17 girls’ Waterpolo team followed up last year’s Under 15s to win the 2018 National title. Newton Abbot defeated a strong London Otter side 9-6 to take the title in front of a full house at the Manchester Aquatic Centre last weekend. Otter, who beat the Devon side 2 years ago to take the under 15 title could not match the speed, power and superior technique of the Newton side.

Selection of Matt Puddy’s replacement is now complete, after twenty five coach’s Worldwide applied for the vacancy, a challenging selection process saw the original candidates reduced to three excellent coaches. The final phase of the process took place over the 8 and 9th March, it involved a one and half hour pool session and forty minutes formal presentation including a question and answer session. One candidate shone through the process and after a small discussion the selection panel have chosen our new Head Coach.

Cheddar Kingfishers is a competitive swim club with a strong grass roots base in coaching skills in the heart of Somerset’s Mendip Hills. We are based At Kings Fitness & Leisure in Cheddar, Somerset. We have a five lane 25m pool with a panoramic view of the local school playing fields which are available for use in the Summer time for land training. Cheddar Kingfishers has five squads including a Masters squad which all compete in open meets; County and Regional Championships; plus local leagues (Cotswold League and Four Seasons) with some swimmers competing in Arena League for other clubs. Cheddar Kingfishers trains for 46 weeks of the year inline with the centres swim scheme. We currently have good working relationships with larger local clubs and hope to develop thus further.

Interview and Bio of a World Champion. Graeme Milne travelled to Hungary, Budapest for the 17th FINA World Masters Swimming Championships held over 1 week from 14th August 2017 . He swam at the World Championships in a 50M pool with 3 other Cornish masters swimmers (Ali Phesse; CB&H, Mick Swift ;Caradon and Ben Proctor; Newquay) however, because events were held in different arenas , swimmers did not get an opportunity to support each other nor find out how each other did until the results were published.

The South West Region and the Counties which is compromises of are delivering the National Pathway Programme again this year. As part of this there are two conferences which Coaches and Team Managers have the opportunity to attend. The County Conference is on Saturday 17th March 2018 and is aimed towards Level 1 coaches and Team Managers including those coaches and Team Managers who are delivering the County Pathway Programmes along with the Regional Team Managers delivering the Regional Pathway Programme. The Regional Coach Conference is on Saturday 23rd June 2018 and is aimed towards Level 2 coaches including those coaches who are delivering the Regional Pathway Programme.

The South West Region are organising both a Team Manager Module 1 - Local Competitions and a Team Manager Module 2 - Overnight stays and Travelling Abroad workshop. Team Manager training is designed to ensure any volunteers who are taking groups of athletes to competition or camps, locally or abroad, are fully equipped to do their role. There are no pre-requisites for the workshop, and it is recommended for anyone aged 16 or over, although it should be noted that an individual cannot take the role of a Team Manager fully until they turn 18.

See My Voice’ is a 3 year project encouraging young people (aged 11-18 years) with a visual impairment to find and access local sports volunteering roles delivering social action. With our support, we aim to provide our Young Leaders with fun and meaningful volunteering experiences that will develop invaluable leadership skills and increase confidence enhancing their future prospects. Our project officer will work with 35 young leaders annually. Throughout the project we will share project learning with our partners in order to shape their policy and increase accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities in sport for the future.

The 17th Royal Navy Open Masters Meet will take place at Millfield School, Somerset on Sunday 4th March 2018. The event will be swum short course in the 8 lane 25m competition pool with full electronic timing. A second 25m will be available for use as a continuous warm-up/warm-down facility throughout the competition. Free parking will be available at the venue.

Swimathon, the world’s biggest fundraising swim, returns once again in 2018. Over the years, Swimathon’s mission of uniting swimmers around challenges and fundraising has prompted more than 700,000 swimmers to take part at their local pool and raised more than £48 million for charitable causes. Swimathon 2018 will be returning for 2018 and will take place from Friday, April 27 – Sunday, April 29. This year, we are providing the opportunity for your Swim Club to showcase your training and compete together or against each other. On top of building team cohesion, you will be raising money for the joint charity partners of Swimathon 2018, Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie.

At the FINA Congress in July 2017 it was announced that there would be a change of name for Synchronised Swimming to Artistic Swimming. The Region accepts this however will remain to operate under the name of Synchronised Swimming until Swim England implement the change nationally.
