Inter-Regional competition – U14 girls – 2/3rd Dec 2017
The team all arrived keen and raring to go. All but one were competing in their first inter region competition. This young team who were put together last minute came in for a big shock in the first match against the North east. The result clearly showed the girls were playing against one of favourites for tournament. Losing 18-2. The 2 goals came from Captain Katy Daly and Sofia Fountain.
The girl’s second match was against London. This game was a lot tighter than the scoreline shows. The first quarter ended 1-0 to London, This tight match continued to half time with a goal from Sofia Fountain, Score now 2-1 to London. The game continued along the same vein and only a slight lapse in concentration resulted in London scoring 6 goals in quick succession in the 3rd Quarter to gain a 8-1 lead. The last quarter was again really tight with Alice Tubby scoring and the final score was 9-2 to London.
The last match of the day saw South West up against Scotland. This was a very physical match and again very close as the score at the end of the 3rd quarter was 3-2 to us with goals from Sofia Fountain, Freya Webster and Alice Tubby. The last quarter saw the girls kick into action with the captain katy Daly leading from the front with 3 goals and Michela Totolici netting twice to secure our first win of the tournament 8-5.
Sunday started with our first match against the East. This was to secure a place in the 5th-6th playoff match. The girl’s defensive work was amazing and the score at half time was 1-1 with our goal coming from Millie Simon. The 2nd half saw the team step up another gear with Nyah Tomlinson coming close on a couple of occasions and one goal being disallowed. The girls team play came to fruition as goals came from Sofia Fountain, Amelia Jones and 2 from Freya Webster. Final score a 5-3 win.
5th-6th Playoff v East Midlands.
Matches do not come any tighter than this. Sofia Fountain scored two goals to take us to half time 2-1 up. The second half continued along the same lines with a player up situation being converted by Michela Totolici to put us 3-2 up with 1 minute left.
East midlands levelled the match to 3-3 with 10 seconds left to secure the draw at the end of full time.
This then led to a Penalty shootout. The South west girls who stepped up to take penalties were Sofia Fountain, Katy Daly, Freya Webster, Amelia Jones & Michela Totolici. After the penalty shoot-out the score was now 7-7.
This meant one thing, sudden death penalties. Sofia Fountain scored for the south west and Amber Southall made the save to secure the win and 5th place for the south west 8-7.
An absolutely amazing performance from all the most valuable player as voted for by all coaches was presented to Amber Southall. (first ever time playing in goal).
