Erica Godfrey of Clevedon Swimming Club has received the award of Regional Volunteer of the Month for March.
Erica has been a member of Clevedon ASC for approx 5 years now. Unfortunately Erica acquired a long standing shoulder injury which affected her swimming quite significantly. Alas it was a back spasm injury which hospitalised Erica the week before Christmas 2017 which resulted in her absence from the pool for the following three months.
Erica is back in the pool now and trains regularly, thoroughly enjoying her sport, but the effect of her long standing injury has knocked her confidence to compete. Sadly Erica will not be competing in Counties this year.
Prior to the injury, Erica had begun volunteering with Clevedon ASC on the poolside assisting the new young swimmers joining the Club. After a while Erica joined the Young Volunteer Award Scheme and was regularly helping out during County Events, mentored by Kelly Podbury. Erica was proud to be presented her Young Volunteer Certificate in November.
This year Erica continues to volunteer her help at Club level by being poolside and helping our young swimmers. Whilst the pressures of forthcoming GCSEs loom, Erica has also committed to helping Kelly each weekend during this year’s Somerset County Championships and the reason for this nomination.
Kelly posted an email to the Somerset Clubs to drum up some volunteer support after an initial disappointing start to the series of weekend’s galas. Kelly had the following to say:
“My utmost thanks and appreciation go to these individuals, we would not have had what seemed to have been a successful day without them:
Erica Godfrey - who is the YV star of the day, she heard my pleas for help yesterday and Dad emailed me late last night to extend Erica's help, I of course said yes and Erica just dug in and got on with all the jobs that needed to get done!'
Congratulations Erica on your achievements.
