The South West Region Masters Development Day took place in the new Mount Kelly Swim Centre on June 11th with 27 swimmers taking part.
The programme included two 90 minute swim sessions, a presentation by sports psychologist Dr Karen Howells PhD CPsychol and a Land Training session led by Nye Levett of NL Wellness.
The first session was taken by Greg King in the new 50m 'Olympic Legacy' pool and concentrated on drills and stroke technique.
This was followed by a break for coffee and biscuits.
After coffee, Professor Dr Karen Howells presented her talk 'Using Psychological Skills to Build Confidence', this was very well received by everyone and left many in the group keen to get back into the water and put the positive ideas into practice. I'm sure many of the group will have adjusted their attitude and approach to training after listening to Karen's lecture.
The weather was on the organiser’s side and the attendees were able to eat their lunch outdoors and enjoy the sunshine.
After lunch Nye Levett delivered a land training session which was organised to offer graded exercises for the spectrum of ages and ability of those attending.
Prior to the event Nye had sent comprehensive worksheets through which were handed out on the day.
The gym session was followed by the second swim of the day which was led by Steve Carder.
To round off the day there was a question and answer session, in which Nye and Steve fielded questions on many aspects of nutrition and training techniques, both on land and in the water.
The feedback given on the day and in the follow up evaluation sheets was extremely positive.
